Music cuts across cultures: Certain aspects of our reactions to music universal

Music cuts across cultures: Certain aspects of our reactions to music universal

Whether you’re a Pygmy in the Congolese rainforest or a big-city hipster, certain aspects of music will touch you in the same ways—but others very differently, a study suggests.

“People have been trying to figure out for quite a while whether the way that we react to music is based on the culture that we come from or on some universal features of the music itself,” said co-researcher Stephen McAdams of McGill University in Montreal. “Now we know that it is actually a bit of both.”

The researchers traveled deep into the rainforest to play music to a very isolated people, the Mbenzélé Pygmies, who live without radio, television or electricity. They then compared how the Mbenzélé responded both to their own and to unfamiliar Western music, with how Canadians in downtown Montreal responded to the same pieces.

They found that the two groups were similar in their responses to how exciting or calming they found the music to be—but differed regarding whether specific pieces made them feel good or bad. The Pygmies tended to rate everything, even “scary” music, as making them happy, according to the study, published in the research journal Frontiers in Psychology.

The investigators played 19 short musical extracts (11 western and 8 Pygmy) of between about 30 and 90 seconds to 40 Pygmies and an equal number of Canadians. Because all the Mbenzélé Pygmies sing regularly for ceremonial purposes, the Canadians recruited for the study were all either amateur or professional musicians.

The Western music was designed to induce a range of emotions from calm to excited, and from happy to anxious or sad, and included both orchestral music and excerpts from three popular films (Psycho, Star Wars, and Schindler’s List).

The Pygmy pieces were all polyphonic (multiple-voiced) vocal pieces that are fairly upbeat and tend to be performed in ceremonial contexts to calm anger, or express comfort after a death, for example, or to bid good fortune before a hunting expedition leaves the village, or even to pacify a crying child.

The researchers used emoticons with smiling or frowning faces at each end of a continuum to get people to identify whether the music made them feel good or bad. They also asked participants to rate whether the music made them feel calm (close-eyed emoticon) or excited (open-eyed face). As participants listened, various measurements were also taken such as heart rate, rate of respiration, and amount of sweat on the palms.

“Our major discovery is that listeners from very different groups both responded to how exciting or calming they felt the music to be in similar ways,” said Hauke Egermann of the Technische Universität in Berlin, who did part of the research while at McGill University in Montreal. “This is probably due to certain low-level aspects of music such as tempo (or beat), pitch (how high or low the music is on the scale) and timbre (tone color or quality), but this will need further research.”

The main difference between Pygmy and Canadian listeners, the researchers said, was that the Canadians described themselves as feeling a much wider range of emotions as they listened to the Western music than the Pygmies felt when listening to either their own or Western music. This is probably attributable to the varying roles that music plays in each culture.

“Negative emotions are felt to disturb the harmony of the forest in Pygmy culture and are therefore dangerous,” said Nathalie Fernando of the University of Montreal’s Faculty of Music, who has been collecting and documenting Mbenzélé music-making for 10 years. “If a baby is crying, the Mbenzélé will sing a happy song. If the men are scared of going hunting, they will sing a happy song—in general music is used in this culture to evacuate all negative emotions, so it is not really surprising that the Mbenzélé feel that all the music they hear makes them feel good.”

Scientists found punishing kids for lying doesn’t work

Scientists found punishing kids for lying doesn’t work

If you want your child to be truthful, it’s best not to threaten punishment if she or he lies, a study suggests: children are more likely to tell the truth either to please an adult or because they believe it’s the right thing to do.

That’s what psychologists found through an experiment involving 372 children between the ages of 4 and 8.

“If children fear potential negative outcomes for disclosing information, they may be more reluctant to disclose,” the researchers, led by Victoria Talwar of McGill University in Canada, wrote in a paper for the Feb. 2015 issue of the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology.

The researchers left each child alone in a room for a minute with a toy behind them on a table, having told the child not to peek during their absence. Experimenters told some of the children they would “be in trouble” if they lied about that, while for other youngsters the experimenters mentioned only positive reasons for telling the truth.

A hidden video camera filmed what went on while the child was alone. Upon returning, the experimenter would ask: “When I was gone, did you turn around and peak at the toy?”

About two-thirds of the children peeked, though for every one month increase in age, children became slightly less likely to peek, the study found. Moreover, about two-thirds of the peekers lied about having looked, and month-by-month as children aged, they both become more likely to tell lies and more adept at maintaining their lies.

The researchers also found that the threat of being “in trouble” alone led to more than twice the rate of lying as the appeals to conscience or good feelings alone. Combinations of both types of inducements led to in-between results.

The investigators also expected and found, they said, that while younger children were more focused on telling the truth to please the adults, older children had better internalized standards of behavior that made them tell the truth because it was the right thing to do.

“The bottom line is that punishment does not promote truth-telling,” said Talwar. “In fact, the threat of punishment can have the reverse effect by reducing the likelihood that children will tell the truth when encouraged to do so.”

Moral “taint” still seeps along blood lines

Moral “taint” still seeps along blood lines

It may be unfair, it may be antiquated, but we are still blamed to some degree for the sins of our relatives, according to a set of newly reported surveys.

Ordinary people “exhibit the intuition that individuals are somehow tainted by the acts of persons with whom they share blood ties—even when they share little else,” wrote researchers who described the findings in the May 31 advance online issue of the journal Cognition.

“Our results suggest that the ‘sins of the father’ practices observed in the modern and ancient worlds are not entirely due to beliefs about the social ties held between family members. Rather, they may be guided by intuitions about blood; that, much like physical and psychological features, the taint of immoral actions is something that spreads between biological relatives.”

Researchers at Yale University and three other institutions carried out the study.

Officially or openly ascribing blame to the relatives of criminals is rare in modern, well-educated societies. Such practices are largely relegated to ancient history, including Biblical times, and to “honor- based cultures such as Albania,” wrote the researchers. There, “if one’s own family member is murdered, it is seen as justified to murder a member of the perpetrator’s family in retribution.”

Still, even in advanced societies, official practice and gut feelings don’t always match.

The researchers recruited 191 adults as study participants through an Amazon.com service known as Mechanical Turk, which has also been used in past social science research. A study published in the Aug. 2010 issue of the journal Judgment and Decision Making concluded that study subjects recruited through the service were reasonably representative of the U.S. population.

The researchers in the new study presented their participant group with various hypothetical scenarios, then asked them their feelings about culpability and responsibility among the characters in these vignettes.

In a first study, participants were told of a Depression-era factory owner who had gotten wealthy while forcing dangerous, sometimes deadly working conditions on his employees. This man had a living grandchild; some participants were told that the grandchild was related by blood, others that the relationship was only through marriage. Either way, the grandchild had inherited none of the fortune—but he did recently win a lottery.

Participants were then asked whether the grandchild should donate some of his winnings to an education fund for the factory victims’ descendants, or to another charity; and to describe their certainty on a scale from one to nine, respectively. The average response was 4.15 when the relationship was by blood, and 5.28 when it was by marriage only, the researchers found.

In another survey, the scenario was that a robber had murdered a convenience store clerk; the only record of the event was a videotape; and the police had captured two perfect look-alikes, equally likely to be guilty. The question: should the police lock both of them up while searching for further evidence? The only twist was that in some tellings of the scenario, the look-alikes were actually twins, whereas in other tellings they were unrelated. Finally, participants were asked whether, on a scale of one to seven, both participants should definitely be locked up, or both definitely set free.

The average answer was 3.03 for twins, but 4.21 for unrelated look-alikes.

In a third study, participants were simply asked flat-out whether their “gut feeling” was that a child would be “somehow tainted” by a relative’s actions. They were given a new scenario, this one about “Dennis,” an adopted child who discovers that one of his relatives through his original family was a war criminal. Depending on the telling, this relative was either his biological father, or merely his stepfather; either way he is a stranger to Dennis. Participants were asked to state on a scale of one to seven, respectively, whether Dennis is untainted, or tainted.

The average response: taintedness of 2.69 if the wrongdoer was the stepfather; 3.57 if he was the biological father.

The simplest reason why people may ascribe taint to relatives of criminals is through “brute association,” the researchers wrote. “For example, participants avoid individuals who have a haircut similar to a person they dislike.” However, there may be logical, or simply practical reasons to do so, the investigators added. Parents may plausibly pass their moral values on to their children. And as a deterrent, threatening lawbreakers’ families with punishment often works—unfair though it may be.

“A different, yet compatible explanation is that of common- sense essentialism—the notion that physical objects and living organisms have an underlying essence that makes them what they are,” the researchers wrote. “In the case of living organisms, that underlying essence is assumed to be passed on from parents to their children.” And while modern genetics shows that traits really are inherited, they added, many people simply believe it on a gut level even if they know nothing about genes.

Scientists found some brain cells whose signals reflect our interpretation of an image—not so much the image itself

Scientists have identified some brain cells whose signals reflect our interpretation of an image—not so much the image itself, a study has found.

The researchers presented volunteers with photographs that lent themselves to two interpretations: each photo was a cross between two Hollywood celebrities. Certain information-carrying brain cells, or neurons, were found to fire signals depending on which actor the volunteer took the image to represent.

The findings echo a strand of philosophical thought known as British Empiricism as well as the ideas of Aristotle, some 2,400 years ago, said Rodrigo Quian Quiroga, a collaborator in the study.

“As Aristotle put it, we create images of the external world and use these images rather than the sensory stimulus itself for our thoughts. These neurons encode exactly that,” said Quiroga, who is director of the Center for Systems Neuroscience and head of bioengineering at the University of Leicester, U.K.

Many neurons fire off electrical signals, called action potentials, in response to specific stimuli. Which stimuli provoke signals, and how, differs depending on the exact cell or brain area. From this kind of activity, neuroscientists can figure out which tasks a specific neuron is involved in—for example, recognizing specific types of objects or ideas.

In Quiroga’s study, for example, a neuron that originally reacted only to Whoopi Goldberg images fired to a “morph image” between Goldberg and Bob Marley only when the subject identified the morphed image as Goldberg. That same neuron remained inactive when the subject said the very same image was Marley.

The researchers concluded that neurons fire in line with conscious recognition of images rather than the actual images seen. Furthermore, they said, in most cases the neuron’s responses to morphed pictures were the same as when shown the pictures without morphing.

The study is published in the research journal Neuron.

“We are constantly bombarded with noisy and ambiguous sensory information,” Quiroga noted. “Our brain is constantly making decisions based on such limited data.”

Although brain cells certainly exist that respond to specific features of an image—down to precise lines and shadows—Quiroga said the study shows that some brain cells respond to more than just these parts, or even their sum total. They report our interpretation of the image.

The cells were identified in an area of the brain called the medial temporal lobe, deep behind the temples. These neurons may also “play a key role in the formation of memory,” Quiroga said.

“We indeed see the face of a friend rather than the combination of visual features that compose the person’s face,” he argued. “The neurons we report in this article fire exactly to this.”

Toxic environment makes you older than your age

Toxic environment makes you older than your age

Why are some 75-year-olds downright spry while others can barely get around? Part of the explanation, say researchers in a new study, is differences in exposure to harmful substances in the environment, chemicals such as benzene, cigarette smoke, and even stress.

While the birth date on your driver’s license can tell you your chronological age, that might mean little in terms of your body’s biological age. The researchers say that what we need now is a better understanding of the chemicals involved in aging and “biomarkers” to measure their effects.

“The rate of physiological, or molecular, aging differs between individuals in part because of exposure to ‘gerontogens’, i.e., environmental factors that affect aging,” said Norman Sharpless from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. “We believe just as an understanding of carcinogens has informed cancer biology, so will an understanding of gerontogens benefit the study of aging. By identifying and avoiding gerontogens, we will be able to influence aging and life expectancy.”

The study is published May 28 in the journal Trends in Molecular Medicine.

In the future, blood tests evaluating biomarkers of molecular age might be used to understand differences amongst individuals in aging rates. Those tests might measure key pathways involved in the process of cellular senescence or chemical modifications to DNA. In fact, Sharpless said in the interest of full disclosure that he has founded a company to commercialize molecular tests of aging.

From a public health perspective, cigarette smoke is likely the most important gerontogen, Sharpless said. Cigarettes are linked with cancers but also with atherosclerosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and other age-associated diseases. UV radiation from the sun makes us older too, and Sharpless and his colleagues recently showed that chemotherapy treatment is also a strong gerontogen. With the aid of a mouse model that they developed, his team is prepared to study these gerontogens and others in much greater detail.

The researchers call for a concerted research effort to understand the clinical uses for molecular tests of aging. “We believe the comparison of molecular markers of aging to clinical outcomes should begin in earnest,” Sharpless said. For example, he asked, can biomarkers to aging predict toxicity from surgery or chemotherapy in patients in whom chronological age is already a known risk factor?

Sharpless does caution against making tests of molecular age available to consumers and patients directly. “The potential for miscommunication and other harm seems real,” he said.

Don’t tell kids about the benifits any food, study suggests

Don’t tell kids about the benifits any food, study suggests

At some point, most kids will hear that drinking milk helps make their bones strong or that fish is food for the brain. But do these messages foster the idea that if something is good for us, it must surely taste bad?

According to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research, when children hear about the benefits of healthy food, they’re less likely to eat it.

“Parents and caregivers who are struggling to get children to eat healthier may be better off simply serving the food without saying anything about it, or (if credible) emphasizing how yummy the food actually is,” the authors wrote.

The research tested the prediction that “when food is presented to children as making them strong or as a tool to achieve a goal such as learning how to read or count, they would conclude the food is not as tasty and therefore consume less of it,” wrote the authors, Michal Maimaran of Northwestern University in Illinois and Ayelet Fishbach of the University of Chicago.

They conducted five experiments with children between the ages of three and five. In all of the studies, the children were read a picture book story about a girl who ate a snack of crackers or carrots. Depending on the experiment, the story either did or did not state the benefits of the snack (making the girl strong or helping her learn how to count). The children were then given the opportunity to eat the food featured in the story and the authors measured how much they ate. The children ate more when they did not receive any message about the foods making them strong or helping them learn how to count.

Brands marketing food items to parents and children can use these results to deemphasize the benefits of healthy food and focus more on the positive experience of eating the food. the researchers wrote. These results also help to empower policymakers and medical institutions looking to combat childhood obesity and juvenile diabetes, they added.
